well, for the record there are NO Easter eggs, NO chocolate overdoses and NO hot cross buns in the Costa Rican version of Easter
and how I miss them.
there IS an excess of old movies featuring men in beards wearing dresses and sandals however….

it must be said; they do it all weird here, playing up the sad Good Friday with parades of real life (like) crucifixions and emphasis on major suffering and bad television and everything shutdown for Good Friday
but then strangely Easter Saturday – when supposedly we’re all in mourning – life is simply back to normal, and REALLY weirdly Easter Sunday (apart from maybe some extra long masses) nothing so special as being the last day of the holiday break….no special HOORAY celebrations at all….
my guess is it’s the Catholic church training the poor to indulge in their suffering and defer celebrating its ending, when there is no end necessarily in sight….
NO nodding to pagan rite of spring rituals indulged either
so enjoy your pagan rituals, all ye who can, is my advice.
for we’re all back to work on Monday

now that you mention it, i guess it is true that the Hispanic tradition does seem to focus more on the death of Christ than the resurrection. I did the long mass thing last night – I have to cook and clean today so as to feed the family. oddly, my grands aren’t all that into the candy thing so grandpa makes sure an electronic game stuffs their Easter baskets along with some token jelly beans and some peeps. Monday will be back to work for me too after a well deserved 3 day weekend but the kids will be off on spring break. you and your family have a great day! peace, Al

have a good one too Al!
Hey Lucy! Hope your “Easter” was good! I also thought it was strange that they’re so into the pobrecito, Jesus is dead mentality, and I wrote about it a few years ago:

In any case, the best Easter movie is surely Jesus Christ Superstar, although I didn’t see it on TV (thankfully I have it on DVD, and watched it on Good Friday, making it a Great Friday!)
What’s the Buzz,
Ryan

tell me what’s a-happening!
and thanks, we had a great easter, albeit without all the joyfull paganistic trappings appropraite to the occasion – just like Whoville after the Easter grinch strikes – JCS was on national TV last year but I didn’t see it this one. may have to coopt your copy one of these days so the children know what i’m talking about/singing…
